Introducing Kertin Vasser

Kertin Vasser is featured in the “Kingdom of Dreams” book for photo series taken for both Tanel Veenre’s artwork and brand jewellery. Interview with Kertin by Tanel Veenre. EST / ENG

Tajun sinu fotodel mingit valulikku nihet. Kuidas see tuleb pildile?

Millest praegu unistad?

I often perceive some sort of poignant shift in the photos. How did that get there?

I try to take photographs that are aesthetically enjoyable but I don’t want beauty to be the only value. I really like beauty, but without some sort of shift, it is a little too one-dimensional for me.

Although you’re sharp, I don’t detect any cynicism in your photographs. Talk about the relationship between irony and sincerity in your work.

As a person, I’m more critical, in life and in photographs. I try to be constructive in my criticism, not to engage in criticism for the sake of development or dialogue. I am sincere but I realize that people have different sensibilities and for some, I can come across as cynical in my work and as a person.

Photographers tend to develop their favorite models. What do your models have in common?

I love models who dare to be not beautiful but who don’t have hang-ups about their facial features.

How much room in your work is left up to chance, how much is planned?

The outline is pretty much in place, but on the set, it’s 50% about following the plan and 50% improv.

What do you dream of these days?

I’m not a big dreamer, but I want to be able to feel love, and joy in little everyday things.
